Bar Review: BU Club
BU Club is the latest brain child of Muse Group, located on the 5th floor of Yifeng Galleria in the space formerly occupied by Muse on the Bund. The 1,600sqm lounge has a glitzy long bar, pool tables, plush leather couches and, well, a bunch of other stuff.
The ‘BU’ stands for ‘Brother Union,’ which is what the club’s 21 investors call themselves. As you might guess from the name, this is not just a random group of investors, these guys (some of which are in the Muse Group) have been close friends and businesses partners for a long time.
One of the first things you’ll notice is an enormous, semi-private dining room, right in the middle of the space. We say semi-private because it’s partially hidden by the hundreds of high-end whiskey bottles in glass displays surrounding it.
Why the whiskey bottles? Because the bar's focus is on single malts, and they’ve got over 300 kinds. They’ve also got a drink menu of 21 cocktails that range from RMB 88-108.
‘Blossom Day’- Tangueray Gin, Lychee Liqueur, Rose Syrup, Apple Juice, Lemonade. RMB 88
‘Summer Cup’- Sloe Gin, Pimm’s, Ginger Ale, Apple Juice, Honey, Lemon Juice. RMB 88
‘Judgement Day’- Pisco, Elderflower Liqueur, Lime Juice, Simple Syrup, Egg White. RMB 88
The drinks were all developed by Eddy Yang and his team. You might know Yang from Tailor Bar, a speakeasy in Jingan that requires guests to enter through a medicine shop, treating them to a personalized (or ‘tailored’) cocktail.
As for the aforementioned “other stuff”- If you wander around and start opening doors in BU you’ll find a spa, computer room, a meeting room, a few (fully) private dining rooms, and our favorite: several kick-ass private party rooms equipped with KTV. They’ve also got a full menu of contemporary Chinese dishes available (they’ll custom make the dishes and it costs around RMB 800 per person). And hey there’s even a snack menu from RMB 28-188, and a cigar menu because why not.
BU club’s main bar/lounge area is currently open to the public, if you want to use the other amenities you might just have to get yourself a membership though.
